What Our Dreams Are Really Up To
Ever had a dream that left you waking up with that strange mix of ugh and hmm … interesting? Recently, I had one of those bizarre storylines full of awkward encounters, strange social dynamics, and unsettled feelings. It didn’t make sense on the surface, but underneath, it was pointing toward some bigger lessons about boundaries, self-worth, and growth.
In the spiritual tradition I study and teach, we look at dreams as showing up in three ways:
- Working through everyday life: the little fears, goals, or annoyances we are still processing.
- Astral adventures: where part of our spiritual self is exploring outside the body, learning and experiencing on other planes.
- Messages from our higher self: wisdom from our own divine intelligence of us that knows who we truly are.
Most dreams aren’t just one of these, they’re usually a cocktail of all three. That’s why they can feel so random: one moment you’re processing old fears, the next you’re off on a soul adventure, and then you get hit with a download of guidance you didn’t even know you needed.
When I reflected on my own dream, the lesson was clear: old patterns don’t fit anymore, I can still sit in my wisdom no matter where I am, my resources (time, energy, money) are mine to honor, and boundaries are sacred. The weird details were just the way my subconscious and spirit got the message through.
So next time a dream leaves you feeling unsettled or curious, instead of brushing it off, ask yourself:
- Am I working something out from my day-to-day life?
- Am I on a bigger soul journey – visiting places I have never been before?
- Is my higher self trying to get my attention?
I also want to invite you to consider that a lot of the mental “pictures” or knowings you get from dreams are metaphorical – more often than not. So don’t take it all so literal, get curious – what is my very imaginative and creative soul metaphorically sharing with me.
Dreams aren’t random, they’re invitations.
And sometimes the strangest ones turn out to be the most useful.
